ENNUI TRUST- SNUFF & STUFF VHS [S/T]

 

Thought I lost this one, but found it cleaning out my room earlier this week. Ennui Trust was my main band back when I lived in Davis. Phil on bass, Trotsky on vocals, and Evan and I on guitar and drums. The VHS idea was mostly Trotsky's, featuring video collage and makeshift videos. Evan started piecing together stock footage and editing them to the songs when we first started and after a music video contest at KDVS, we placed second, won t-shirts along with a photo-shoot that we never followed through on, we decided to put them all on a VHS tape. The tracks are all early demos we recorded on a small recording device. Its a video collage with our songs for 15min, and the rest becomes a B movie of Trotsky's choosing. The last song is Evans animation masterpiece we used for the contest. Who needs a demo tape when you got a demo VHS. Think we tried to send it to MRR for review, but I'm sure they just threw it away, didn't want to bother. Either way, there might be a couple extra copies hiding somewhere in Davis if people still want it.

REISSUE: NO THANKS- ARE YOU READY TO DIE [LENGUA ARMADA 2007]

No Thanks was an early New York hardcore band. Starting in 1982 they were around for two years playing with bands like Heart Attack, False Prophets, and Bad Brains before breaking up in 1984.  Members went on to start other bands like Virus, Bad Tuna Experience, and Missing Foundation. Long story short they got back together in 2007 and reissued this hell of a record. Donna Damage's vocals are some the best, purely raw, with damaged guitar lines giving you plenty to hook onto. The whole things the "Are You Ready To Die 7" EP, with their 1982 Demo, and some Live at CBGB's recordings. Highlights include: 'Are you Ready to Die', 'Surfin Ave A',  and 'Horror'.

REISSUE: THE INJECTIONS- PRISON WALLS [LAST LAUGH 2010]

 

This one was reissued more than two years ago but its one of my favorites that Ive recently picked up. Prison Walls was originally released in 1980 on Radioactive records. Their one of San Diego's punk pioneers. Playing with a simple style, their premature musicianship is more than endearing. No cymbals just three out of tune tombs and a snare lumping away at each song, catchy distorted chords, and shouting vocals. Smart and simple at its best.

REISSUE: ANDROIDS OF MU- BLOOD ROBOTS [Water Wing/ Free Love 2013]

For the next few post I’ll be featuring reissues that have come out the past year.  First up is Androids of Mu’s Blood Robots. Formed in 1979 they were an all female post punk band from London most known for their affiliation with groups like The Mob and The Astronauts. The bands name goes deep relating themselves to some sort of galactic existentialism, believed to come from “The Utopian Civilisation of Mu” where only “women could withstand the rigours of extreme space- time anomaly”. Long story short- they were on some sort of android, taken prisoners, escaped, ended up in west London, scored some synthesizers, and started a band. Blood Robots is an amazing record with minimalist beats and hypnotic guitar chords layered with a touch of outer space wa wa’s. Androids of Mu cover it all; space, androgyny, feminism, ennui, etc.
