NOTHING PAINTED BLUE- THE BELLYSPEAK EP [JUPA 1990]

Nothing Painted Blue was a well-known indie band from LA formed in 1987. The Bellyspeak marks their first 7inch release after their debut LP, "A Baby A Blanket of Seeds". Their songs hold a certain playfulness, toying with twee/punk sounds, full of ironic lyrics and sentimental jangles mocking, mocking love song concepts, most notably on Lets KissIt’s a mix of PERE UBU and TELEVISION PERSONALITIES with one hell of an execution. Jupa put out most of their early material along with bands like REFRIGERATOR and WCKR SPGT to give you an idea of what your in for.

Tracks:

1. K for Karnival
2. Let's Kiss
3. Foundation Slips

Members:

Franklin Bruno: All Vocals, most guitars
Michael Neelon: All basses, more guitars
Kyle Brodie: All drums, no guitar

According to the Wiki Punk database The Cunts are one of Chicago’s longest running punk bands. They play dirty garage with real high energy and a kick ass Farfisa. There’s an interview with the band on YouTube were they go over their influences and talk about how they don’t give shit bout anything. I’ve only listened to “It Came Out Of The Garage” but it seems like they’ve got a huge discography. The records amazing, so take a look.

WESTERN EYES- S/T [TRACE ELEMENTS 1984]

Western Eyes was a new-wave band from the early eighties, not much is known about them or the label Trace Elements. I want to assume they're from the midwest by their wholesome guitar tones and harmonica riffs. They pull off this uncanny balance between avant gard pop, and rock n roll with top notch vocals, they do something thats their own, nonetheless interesting. hg

B TEAM- FIRST PRODUCT [S/R 1982]

B Team is a KDVS classic to me. ‘What Is This’ is one hell of a track as you dive into hypnotizing dance rhythms and jangly bass lines, while the vocals just scream at you as everything breaks down and builds back up. As an SF band during 1982 they share similar qualities to UK bands like Killing Joke and Department S. If you’re a fan of more known labels like Stiff or 415, I highly recommend this. I can only imagine their second release the 'Buy American' lp is just as hard hitting, this 7" is a masterpiece. hg
